Salesforce has a certification for almost everything, which is exactly the problem: it’s easy to collect badges that don’t move your career. Having gone through the Marketing Cloud and B2C Commerce tracks myself, here’s how I’d think about which certifications are worth the effort in 2026, and in what order.
First: certifications are a signal, not the goal
A certification proves you know a platform’s concepts. It does not prove you can architect a solution or run a project — that’s what experience shows. So treat certs as a way to open doors and structure your learning, not as a substitute for real work. The people who win stack certs and ship projects.
The Marketing Cloud track
If you’re going into Marketing Cloud (Engagement), a sensible progression:
- Email Specialist — the foundation. Email Studio, deliverability, basic automation. Start here.
- Administrator — account setup, users, data model, Contact Builder. The operational backbone.
- Developer — AMPscript, SSJS, SQL, APIs. This is where you become genuinely useful and hard to replace.
- Consultant — pulls it together into solution design and best practices. A strong capstone for the track.
The Developer cert is the one that changes how people see you: it’s the difference between “runs campaigns” and “builds the platform.”
The B2C Commerce track
For Salesforce B2C Commerce:
- B2C Commerce Developer — SFRA, cartridges, the platform’s dev model. The technical foundation.
- B2C Commerce Architect — the step up: solution design, integrations, performance, the whole picture. This is a genuine differentiator because far fewer people hold it.
B2C Commerce skills are scarcer than Marketing Cloud skills, which makes this track especially valuable if you want to stand out.
The architect track (where it gets strategic)
Beyond product certs, Salesforce has the Architect pyramid — Application Architect, System Architect, and ultimately the CTA (Certified Technical Architect). You don’t need to summit it, but moving toward Application Architect / System Architect signals you think in solutions and integrations, not just one product. If your goal is a Solution Architect or technology-leadership role, this is the direction that matters.
My honest recommendation on order
- Get deep in one product first (Marketing Cloud or B2C Commerce) — Developer level. Depth beats breadth early.
- Add the Architect cert for that product to prove you design, not just build.
- Broaden toward the cross-product Architect track once you’re being asked to design whole solutions.
- Consider an adjacent cloud (e.g. Azure/AWS architecture) if your work spans beyond Salesforce — the rare Salesforce-plus-cloud combination is worth a lot.
What actually moves your career
- Depth in a scarce skill (B2C Commerce Architect, Marketing Cloud Developer) beats a long list of easy admin certs.
- Certs plus visible work — a blog, community talks, real projects — beats certs alone. A badge says you passed an exam; a portfolio says you can do the job.
- Alignment with where you want to go. Don’t collect randomly. Pick the cert that opens the next door on the path you actually want.
Certifications are a fantastic forcing function to learn a platform properly. Just remember what they are: a structured start and a credible signal — the beginning of expertise, not proof of it.
