One of the most common questions I get from clients evaluating Salesforce for marketing is deceptively simple: “Do we need Marketing Cloud or Pardot?” The naming doesn’t help — Salesforce now calls them Marketing Cloud Engagement (MCE) and Marketing Cloud Account Engagement (the product formerly known as Pardot) — so people assume they’re two flavors of the same thing. They aren’t. Choosing wrong is expensive and hard to undo.
Here’s how I frame the decision.
The one-line answer
- Account Engagement (Pardot) → B2B. Long sales cycles, lead nurturing, tight alignment with a sales team working opportunities in Sales Cloud.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement → B2C (and B2B2C). High-volume, multi-channel, real-time, individual-consumer marketing.
If you sell to businesses through a sales team, start with Account Engagement. If you market to consumers at scale across email, SMS, push, and ads, start with Marketing Cloud Engagement.
Where the real differences are
Data model
- Account Engagement thinks in Prospects, and lives close to the Salesforce CRM (Leads, Contacts, Campaigns, Opportunities). It’s designed to score and grade leads and hand them to sales.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement thinks in Subscribers and Data Extensions — a flexible, high-volume data model that isn’t natively the CRM. Integration with Sales/Service Cloud is a project, not a given.
Volume and channels
- Account Engagement is email-centric with lighter volumes typical of B2B.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement is built for millions of sends and true omni-channel (email, SMS via MobileConnect, push, ads, WhatsApp).
Personalization and logic
- Account Engagement: Engagement Studio for nurture, form handlers, scoring/grading. Approachable for marketers.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement: Journey Builder, AMPscript/SSJS, SQL over Data Views. Far more powerful, and it requires more technical skill.
Who operates it
- Account Engagement can largely be run by a marketing team.
- Marketing Cloud Engagement usually needs a developer or a certified specialist in the loop for anything non-trivial.
A quick decision checklist
Choose Account Engagement (Pardot) if:
- Your buyers are companies, and marketing’s job is to feed a sales pipeline
- Lead scoring and grading matter more than send volume
- You want tight, out-of-the-box coupling with Sales Cloud
Choose Marketing Cloud Engagement if:
- You market directly to consumers at scale
- You need SMS, push, and multi-channel journeys, not just email
- You need deep personalization and custom data logic
- Send volume is high and segmentation is complex
The traps I see
- Buying MCE for a B2B lead-nurture use case because it “sounds more powerful.” You end up building in code what Pardot does out of the box, and alienating the marketing team.
- Buying Pardot for a high-volume B2C brand and hitting its ceiling on volume, channels, and personalization within a year.
- Assuming either one is “connected to Salesforce” by default. Account Engagement is close to the CRM; Marketing Cloud Engagement needs a deliberate integration (Marketing Cloud Connect or API).
- Ignoring the operating model. The tool you can actually staff and run beats the more powerful tool you can’t.
Bottom line
This isn’t a “which is better” question — they’re different products for different motions. Map your go-to-market (B2B vs B2C), your channel needs, and the team that will run it before you look at features. Get those three right and the choice makes itself; get them wrong and no amount of platform power will save the project.
